What is sleep apnea?

A warm welcome to SurgeryForSleepApnea.org – an unbiased and informative website, providing useful information for sleep apnea patients who are on the verge of undergoing surgery.

Surgery is a word most of us hate – even it is happening to someone else. The pain, discomfort, loss of wages, high costs and the ensuing risks and complications have given surgery a bad name. Yet, there are several emergency as well as chronic health situations that demand surgery, as there is really no other way out to get relief or cure.

Sleep apnea or more specifically obstructive sleep apnea is one such dreadful sleep disorder that misleadingly starts simple, but with time, turns into a life-threatening situation, that often necessitates emergency hospitalization in the middle of the night. Considering that between 12 and 20 million Americans are patients of sleep apnea of varying degrees, it is indeed one of the most common ailments plaguing millions of adult Americans.

But it all starts with some harmless (or so you would like to think) sleep disorder called snoring. Many of us decide to ignore it, and learn to live with the bedroom chaos as well as the relationship problems this noisy intruder creates every night. However, when you know that more than 50% of people diagnosed with sleep apnea are invariably persistent snorers, you know that you should not have ignored that pest called snoring, after all.
